The Lack of Major IT Firms in Guwahati: An Analysis and Prediction
Guwahati, the largest city in the state of Assam, has seen significant growth in the IT sector over the past decade. However, it still lags behind major IT hubs in quality and number of large multinational corporation (MNC) offices. This article explores the reasons behind the absence of prominent IT firms such as TCS, Wipro, PWC, KPMG, EY, Infosys, and Deloitte from Guwahati.
Historical and Security Challenges
Assam and other North Eastern states in India have faced substantial challenges in the past, particularly due to terrorist activities during the 1990s. These incidents have had a long-lasting impact on both the security and economic development of the region. The impact of these events has been so severe that Assam and these states are still lagging by almost 20 years compared to the rest of India in terms of IT development.
Administrative and Developmental Impacts
The North Eastern states have often been neglected by the central government and public sector undertakings, leading to a lack of quality education and medical care. Similarly, due to these challenges, many private companies considered postings to these regions as punishment or discouraged their employees from moving there, unless they were incentivized.
Rising Hopes for Guwahati and North Guwahati
However, with the completion and opening of the North Guwahati bridge, there is a renewed hope that the IT sector in North Guwahati can follow a similar trajectory to other major cities in India. Guwahati itself is poised for a potential IT wave, largely due to the presence of notable educational institutions like IIT Guwahati, AEC, JEC Tezpur University, and GU, which are expected to provide a pipeline of qualified IT professionals.
Regional Economy and Central Government Focus
About 50 years of neglect and the impact of terrorist activities in the past have had a profound effect on the region's economic development. Only recently, in the past decade, have some of these issues started to be addressed by the government and development works are being initiated. Similarly, companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have established their offices in locations where there is a critical mass of quality personnel. However, the same critical mass has yet to materialize in Guwahati.
Future Prospects and Conclusion
It is my hope that with the necessary infrastructure and growth in quality education, Guwahati will soon see a significant influx of major IT firms. The presence of premier institutions and the future opening of transport infrastructure will play a pivotal role in this growth. The IT wave in Guwahati is expected to come soon, providing much-needed employment and economic development to the region.
The North East region of India, particularly Guwahati, is at the cusp of a potential transformation. While the IT landscape currently lacks the presence of major IT firms, the future looks promising with the right policies, infrastructure, and continued investment. This transition holds the key to not just the economic growth of the region but also the social well-being and overall development of the area.
