Why I Refuse to Support Certain Companies and My Journey to Conscious Consumerism

As a conscious consumer, I often find myself questioning the political stance of the corporations I support. This article delves into my personal journey of understanding and, ultimately, refusing to support certain companies due to their unethical practices and political beliefs.

Initial Support and Realization

When Obamacare was introduced, Papa John's Pizza received backlash for the CEO's misleading statements about the cost of providing health insurance to employees through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It was later determined that the actual cost would be significantly lower. Despite this, the CEO publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the additional cost, suggesting a lack of support for the healthcare reform.

My initial impression was positive because of his false portrayal of support for the ACA, but upon further investigation, I realized that his actions were merely a business move to minimize expenses.

Companies and Their Stance on Certain Issues

Levi’s Jeans and Boy Scouts Controversy

I first became reluctant to support Levi’s Jeans when they decided to exclude Boy Scouts from certain advertising campaigns in 1992. At the time, the Boys Scouts of America (BSA) was a well-respected organization that instilled character and patriotism in young boys. However, I eventually decided to boycott Levi’s Corp. products because they were failing to align with my values.

Even though I supported the BSA in my youth, the organization's acceptance of abuse and discrimination against its members changed my perspective. I will not support companies that align with organizations that fail to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals.

Geico and Corporations in the Business World vs. Political World

Geico's support of Black Lives Matter (BLM) led to my decision to switch insurance providers. In the business world, corporations have a responsibility to focus on their core mission and ethically achieve their goals. However, when a company involves itself in political activism, it risks alienating a diverse range of customers.

Verizon, another company I no longer support, took a similar stance in supporting BLM. Corporations must understand that their political and social positions can impact their bottom line and alienate a significant portion of their customer base.

Beyond My Personal Preferences

Though others may ignore the political stance of corporations when making purchasing decisions, it is a different story when it comes to the impact on shareholders. Coca-Cola, a company presumably influenced by similar pressures, should be held accountable by its shareholders. If shareholders were more proactive, they could demand transparency and accountability from those responsible for making these decisions.

Instead of bemoaning the corporate world's political leanings, consumers should also use their purchasing power to support companies that align with their values. In doing so, they can contribute to a more conscious and ethical business environment.

Conclusion

As a conscious consumer, my journey of understanding and refusing to support certain companies due to their unethical practices and political beliefs has been an eye-opening experience. It is essential for consumers to research and voice their opinions, as this can create significant changes within the corporate world. By holding companies accountable and supporting those that align with our values, we can promote a more inclusive and ethical business environment.
